In December of 1996 the iconic Ghostface came to life in the first movie of the Scream franchise. Since 1996, there have been three more movies released in the series, all of which have received progressively lower ratings, aside from the slight increase between the third and fourth movie, according to the Internet Movie Database (IMDb). Despite the decreasing ratings on IMDb, the company has decided to release yet another addition to the series in January 2022.

Scream, which is the title of the fifth movie, is the next movie set to appear on the big screen. With very few plot details released so far, there have been a couple of clues as to what the movie is going to be about. The most details that have been released, is that the storyline follows Sidney Prescott, the main female protagonist, who comes back to her hometown to investigate the violent murders that are occurring because of none other than Ghostface himself. This plotline, and the few details revealed in the first official trailer released by Paramount Pictures on YouTube are the only details that have been released so far, aside from the known cast members.

The complete official cast list is yet to be released ; however, the movie is set to feature a few familiar faces to the fans of this slasher. Neve Campbell, who has been featured in Scream 2, Scream 3, and Scream 4, came back for yet another movie after a little pressure from the directors. Campbell was not the only one who was put into this situation. Courtney Cox and David Arquette, featured in the same three movies of the franchise, were also pressured to come back and continue their infamous roles. Entertainment Weekly stated that “the absence of one or more of the characters portrayed by the actors (Campbell’s final girl Sidney Prescott, Cox’s journalist Gale Weathers, and Arquette’s lawman Dewey Riley) would certainly raise eyebrows among the slasher franchise’s devoted army of fans.” A few other familiar faces that are featured are Jenna Ortega and Dylan Minnette, who were not featured in the other movies.

Critics and fans alike are raving about the trailer and the concept of another scream movie. One user commented on the trailer, “I can tell they took this seriously. Very impressed. That mask is so iconic.” While some users shared their excitement over the nostalgia this conjures up, others were not so thrilled. “I don’t care what y’all say. This did not need a remake,” another user disapproved. Regardless of the poor reviews on IMDb for the prior movies and the disapproval from critics, the franchise continues. So let’s just hope “you like scary movies.”
