Teen Greta Thunberg Fights Climate Change

September 13, 2019

Sixteen-year old Greta Thunberg is showing everyone that, “No One Is Too Small to Make a Difference”. In fact, Thunberg wrote a book with that exact title. Thunberg is a Swedish climate activist that went on a fifteen-day voyage across the Atlantic Ocean to reach the United States. The journey was by no means easy for the teen and her crew. The waters were rough and the sea was shaking her ship through portions of the journey. Thunberg has cared about the climate from a rather young age, half of her life actually.

Once she turned eight, she became educated on the climate struggles the world was beginning to face. By the time Thunberg turned eleven, she became depressed and her family became concerned because she would not speak. The reason being this teen has been diagnosed with Asperger’s syndrome. When interviewed in 2018 for TED talk, Thunberg made a statement that impacted the crowd in which she spoke to. Thunberg stated, “I was diagnosed with Asperger’s syndrome, OCD and selective mutism…That basically means I only speak when I think it’s necessary. Now is one of those moments.”

Greta made a voyage to New York from Sweden to share her activism and knowledge in the United States. Thunberg sailed across the Atlantic so avoid the flight that she would have had to take, and the carbon emissions that her flight would have added to the atmosphere. She made an impact in a lot of other locations as well. Some consider it to be a negative impact, as she was boycotted from doing speeches in France. She addressed the parliament in her speech, which upset many people. The French government banned her from doing speeches any further in their area, due to a negative reaction to a speech she gave while in France. Another impact she has made, is on the teenagers in the United States. Thunberg inspired teenagers in nearly every state to organize some type of event or protest to educate everyone on the impact of climate change.

Some critics of the teen are not seeing what Thunberg is doing as a positive thing. She is sparking protests that are causing students to leave school. The critics are saying that it is “insane” that the teens “contribution to the climate debate has been to encourage kids to ditch school until they get their way.”  Jim Lakely is one of the critics of this sixteen year old. In an interview, Lakely stated that he feels, “Greta is being exploited by the adults around her to push the climate delusion while they use her as a human shield to shame anyone who criticizes the alarmist agenda.”

She has taken to social media to post updates on her travels. She is excited for her arrival in America, as well as the change she plans to bring. Greta took to twitter once she arrived in the United States with the statement, “Finally here. Thank you everyone who came to see me off in Plymouth, and everyone who welcomed me in New York! Now I’m going to rest for a few days, and on Friday I’m going to participate in the strike outside the UN.”

Thunberg continues to update her audience of both supporters and critics, through social media. Along the journey, she continues to educate the world of the effects of climate change, as well as organize rallies and protests. Thunberg is urging everyone to focus on one common goal: preventing the furthering of climate change.
