The Connersville Lady Spartan varsity tennis team competed in their first round of the EIAC Conference on the eleventh at Greensburg High School. The team started off quite shaken from their draft picks, but they came out swinging in their matches. Even though the girls gave it their all, all but number one doubles, fell short.  The number one doubles team of senior, Kelsey Smith, and sophomore, Rylee Fuller beat Batesville 6-4 6-4 and were able to move onto the next round of conference.

The following day, the team returned to the school for the second round of conference. Fuller and Smith faced Greensburg and won 6-2 6-3. The third and final round of conference approached, with only a thirty-minute rest period in between matches.

In the second game of the day, first set, Fuller and Smith pulled a strong lead of 6-3 against Franklin County. However, they came back fighting in the second set, and the Spartans’ lost 1-6. Now came the ten-point tiebreaker.  The score was 9-4, and all of the Spartan fans were on the edge of their seats. They were one point away from becoming conference champions. The crowd erupted into applause as the final point in the Spartans’ favor was scored. “I was so proud of us for never giving up. Also, I was so happy we won conference because it’s been a while since someone [on the team] has won it,” Smith explained. The final score in the tie breaker was 10-4.

“Always believe in yourself, and if you set your mind to achieve something, work hard and don’t give up. You will achieve your goal,” Smith said.
